Former IAS officer Sujata Rout Karthikeyan, wife of former bureaucrat and BJD leader VK Pandian, formally joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Thursday in a move that comes as the regional party works to recover from its electoral setback in Odisha.
BJD president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik was present during her induction at the party headquarters, Sankha Bhawan, in Bhubaneswar. Her entry into active politics had been widely anticipated since she opted for voluntary retirement from the Indian Administrative Service in March 2025.

Sujata Rout Karthikeyan’s political entry follows months of speculation
Speculation over Sujata Rout Karthikeyan’s political future had intensified after her retirement from service. Her husband, VK Pandian, had also taken voluntary retirement in October 2023 before joining the BJD.
Pandian later stepped away from active politics in June 2024 after the BJD suffered defeats in both the Odisha Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, bringing an end to the party’s uninterrupted 24-year rule in the state.
BJD says experience is key to rebuilding after Odisha election defeat
Speaking to ANI, BJD leader Manmath Routray said the party had reflected on the reasons behind its electoral loss and concluded that experienced administrators like Sujata Rout Karthikeyan could play an important role in its future.
“After analysing the reasons behind the defeat, whether it was due to overconfidence or negligence, we have realised that experienced and capable people like Sujata should be part of the party,” he said.
Routray said party leaders had been urging Naveen Patnaik for some time to induct her into the organisation.
“We have been requesting Naveen Patnaik for a long time to bring such a talented person into the party,” he said.
He also praised her administrative background, communication skills and planning abilities.
“Her behaviour, language, planning and knowledge show that she is the right person for the state,” Routray said.
According to him, Sujata Rout Karthikeyan is motivated by public service rather than political office.
“As far as I know, she is not interested in any post or title. Her focus will be on bringing Odisha back on the path of development,” he added.
